Bieber’s ice bucket challenge

August 18, 2014

Justin Bieber is daring his fans to take the so-called “ice bucket challenge”.

The 20-year-old pop star is the latest in a long line of celebrities to join in the shiver-inducing viral video campaign to raise funds and awareness for neurodegenerative disease ALS.

Justin posted two videos online Sunday showing himself tossing a bucket of ice-cold water over his head before challenging his fans around the world to do the same.

“Alright, second ice bucket challenge today,” he says in the clip. “I nominate my Beliebers all over the world. I know you guys got an ice bucket somewhere,” Justin dares before splashing the frigid H2O over his head.

“Accept? U have 24 hours #beliebers or u can donate to ALS here… #alsicebucketchallenge #giveback :) (sic),” the singer then wrote on his social media pages, including a link to the official ALS website.

The video followed another in which Justin nominated friend Ellen DeGeneres and US President Barack Obama.

“I accept, now I nominate @Theellenshow my main man President Barack Obama and @chrisdelia #alsicebucketchallenge,” he captioned another Instagram video of himself trying to catch his breath after throwing the water over his head.

It didn’t take long for Justin’s fans to follow suit.

The pop star, who was challenged by manager Scooter Braun to take the plunge, had re-tweeted several fan videos within minutes of posting his own.

RPatz: Competition fuels me

August 15, 2014

Robert Pattinson is “like a dog” when he really wants something.

The 28-year-old actor’s career soared after taking on the lead role of vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies. He left the character behind after starring features such as Water For Elephants and Cosmopolis, enhancing his abilities as an actor.

Robert may be sought after in the industry but still has to audition for projects – a process which he is irked by.

“I’m quite good at doing meetings. If I’m just meeting someone about a job I’m like a dog, especially if my agent’s said to me: ‘A lot of people want this job.’ Then I’m like: ‘Oh yeah? Then I will do anything to get it!’” he laughed to British newspaper The Guardian. “I don’t know, I just become a b******t artist! That’s when I start acting! I’m really much better at doing it when the cameras aren’t rolling…”

For his latest movie The Rover, in which he plays Rey, Robert found it incredibly nerve-racking to try-out. He describes his behaviour as neurotic, and recalled some of the actions he pulled out while in front of the camera.

“I just can’t… I literally can’t do it. It’s just me looking uncomfortable, trying to put on an American accent… or sitting in the corner, making myself throw up and punching myself in the face,” he explained.

“Just that you think that someone actually believes you can do something. That makes me sound like such an idiot. It’s crazy,” he added when asked what helps him get past his neuroses.

Despite the initial anxiety, Robert admits he does feel relieved when he wins a role. He even finds the finished result spiritual.

“For whatever reason, I think there’s something profoundly satisfying about being able to watch something you’ve done afterwards, or to just do a scene and feel like: ‘Oh, I just had an out-of-body experience for a second!’” he gushed.

“Just for one second. And generally people don’t even notice. It feels literally like you’ve been asleep for a second.”

Vegetarian Foodfest Returns this September

Kids at VegfestSince its inception in 2003, Vegfest has become the go-to event of the year for those passionate about fresh food and health-conscious living. The home-grown festival is growing and now regularly attracts an annual number of around 10,000 visitors every year, with over

200 stalls exhibiting quality food and lifestyle produce, Vegfest is returning to London 27th & 28th of September 2014.

This year’s event plays host to a range of new vendors serving up delicious fresh food onsite including authentic sushis, pad thais, Caribbean stews and Indian snacks, as well as artisan vegan meats, cheeses and desserts. Live cooking demonstrations will take place throughout the weekend by some of the city’s most notable chefs and influential foodies including Pasquale Amico, Head Chef of Amico Bio and Ms Cupcake founder Melissa Morgan.

Vegfest’s Tim Barford and Alan Lee have been organising some of the UK’s biggest vegan events for years; they say:

‘We’re passionate about showing the benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle. Our events are all about having fun, learning and trying new things. It’s easy enough being vegan these days, but take the fun out of it too and life can get very boring…’

Macs London 10 minutes with: Lily Oakes

May 29, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-05-29 at 11.25.34Up and coming artist Lily Oakes is a female singer-songwriter from London, backed up by full band. Using classical production that features violin and piano, blending harmonies with beats with a hint of trip hop, the music is minimal and allows her unique voice to stand out. “I’ve honed my sound since 14 where vocals and production are of equal value. The Isolating of raw materiality of sound and classical composition is used to eliminate context and create a remainder of silence to re-enforce feeling. A less is more technique that gives precedence to the more emotive elements.”

Macs Magazine had the pleasure of meeting this talented young lady.

Awake

Q. Who or what is the love of your life?

Q. When were you at your happiest?
September 2011

Win tickets to the Fabulous Foodies Festival THIS SUMMER

May 14, 2014

Foodies Festival, the UK’s biggest celebration of food and drink, has announced four London dates as part of its nine strong nationwide summer line-up. In an exciting development, two of these are brand new festivals, run in partnership with English Heritage.

From Friday 30th May to Sunday 1st June, Foodies Festival will be at Kenwood House bringing the festival to Hampstead Heath and one of the nation’s most celebrated stately homes, recently refurbished to the tune of £5 million. Macs Magazine are giving away 2 pairs of tickets to Kenwood house to our luck lucky readers. All you have to do is ‘LIKE’ Macs London and Foodies Festival on Facebook…it’s that simple.

Screen Shot 2014-05-14 at 15.51.56

The London dates are completed by a return to Clapham Common (Friday 6th to Sunday 8th June) and Battersea Park (Friday 15th to Sunday 17th August), which last year saw 30,000 and 34,000 people respectively enjoy a vast array of culinary activities.

Now in its ninth year, Foodies Festivals attracts 250,000 visitors across nine outdoor festivals, each held over three days.

This year welcomes an extensive array of top chefs, including Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite (pictured right); Steven Edwards and Adam Handling, winner and runner up of MasterChef: The Professionals 2013 and 2012 and 2013 MasterChef victors Shelina Permalloo and Natalie Coleman.

Commented Natalie, “As MasterChef Winner 2013 I am really pleased to be taking part in the Chefs’ Theatre at Foodies Festival this year, particularly with so many well respected chefs involved. I’ll be cooking my favourite summer recipes and visitors will have the chance to take the recipes away with them to cook at home. ”

Also in attendance will be Anna Haugh-Kelly, head chef at Gordon Ramsay’s London House; Michelin starred Birmingham chef and Great British Menu judge Glynn Purnell and Michael Wignall, winner of two Michelin stars at The Latymer at Pennyhill Park Hotel and a guest judge on MasterChef: The Professionals. Other Michelin- starred maestros who will be demonstrating their considerable skills at Foodies Festivals include Steve Drake (Drake’s), Tim Allen (Launceston Place) and Robert Ortiz (Lima).

New features this year include Chocolate, Cake, Bake and Preserves Theatre, whilst a BBQ Arena will feature hourly demonstrations from outdoor cooking expert Rob Kennedy. Another exciting addition is the Vintage Tea Tent that will hold daily tea dances, alongside a Vintage Kitchen Market.

Some like it hot – and if so, they should make a beeline for the Chilli Food Market that will also host a daily Chilli Eating Challenge!

A Feasting Tent will become the social hub of the festival, and if all this activity has built up a thirst, visitors can kick back and relax on hay bales at the Real Ale and Cider Farm.

Back by popular demand at Foodies Festivals this year is the Aga Rangemaster Chefs’ Theatre, where top chefs will be whipping up some fabulous summer dishes.

In other highlights, guests can sup samples of new beers and ales together with incredible cocktails at the Drinks Theatre, buy local artisan fare at The Producers’ Market and dine on a vast array of ready-to-eat dishes on Street Food Avenue.

Even younger visitors are well catered for thanks to The Children’s Cookery Theatre, which will give them the opportunity to cook food from around the world.

One day adult tickets for Foodies Festivals at Marble Hill, Kenwood House, Clapham Common and Battersea Park cost £15 (£12 Friday ticket and concession). A three day adult ticket costs £25 (£18 concession) and a one day VIP ticket – including a glass of bubbly on arrival, access to the VIP tent with its own private bar and views of the entertainment stage; a goody bag and priority entry in theatre and masterclass sessions – costs £48 (£45 on Friday).

Win one of five copies of The Vagenda: A Zero Tolerance Guide to the Media

April 29, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-04-29 at 14.04.22To celebrate the publication of The Vagenda: A Zero Tolerance Guide to the Media by Holly Baxter and Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett, we are offering five lucky winners the chance to win a copy of this laugh out-loud, brilliantly bolshy book! A rallying call to girls and women of all ages, it asks the deceptively simple question:

Why can’t we have a media that reflects who we actually are?

To be in with a chance of winning this great prize, simply answer the following question:

What year did Rhiannon and Holly start their blog, The Vagenda?

A.      2012

B.      2013

C.       2014

All answers can be emailed to Georgina@macsmagazine.com

As students, Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett and Holly Baxter spent a lot of time laughing at magazine pieces entitled things like ’50 Sex Tips to Please Your Man’ (particularly the ones that encouraged bringing baked goods into the bedroom). They laughed at the ridiculous ‘circles of shame’ detailing minor weight fluctuations of female celebs, or the shocking presence of armpit hair.  And at the articles telling you how to remove cellulite from your arse using coffee granules. But when they stopped laughing, they started to feel a bit uneasy. Was this relentless hum about vajazzles and fat removal just daft – at worst a bit patronising – or was something more disturbing going on?

And so, in February 2012 the two undergraduates started a blog. They called it ‘The Vagenda’, a term they stole from a newspaper article about women in the workplace with a hidden agenda.

The Vagenda quickly went global, with 60,000 hits in its first 24 hours, and 7 million in its first year. It turned out that Rhiannon and Holly weren’t the only people who were feeling a bit uncomfortable about the sidebar of shame. And from underwear shoots that got on their tits, or sex tips that stuck in their throat, everybody wanted to talk about it.

For more information on The Vagenda visit www.vagendamagazine.com and follow https://twitter.com/VagendaMagazine.

The Vagenda: A Zero Tolerance Guide to the Media is published by Random House on 1st May. For more information please head here: http://bit.ly/TheVagenda

 Terms and Conditions

  • Competition will close on Friday May 16th at 5pm.
  • Open to UK participants only
  • Prize for the five main winners is a copy of The Vagenda: A Zero Tolerance Guide to the Media
  • In the unlikely event the prize style has discontinued a similar model to the same value will be provided
  • There is no cash or other alternative to the prize stated and the prize is not transferable and no part or parts of the prize may be substituted for other benefits, items or additions.
  • Winners will be picked at random and contacted by the site. The prize will be delivered to the winner within 28 days of confirmation of delivery address.
  • The Editor’s decision is final and binding on the entrants. No correspondence will be entered into
